What did I study at university? Classics. What did I do at university? Student radio.

Radio has a long history of engaging people and there’s a lot of value to be gained from learning some of the basics. Radio presenters are allowed into the worlds of their listeners for sometimes hours every day – can you imagine if your brand was allowed the same kind of access?

We’ve recently helped contact lens manufacturer CooperVision with the global launch of its new silicone hydrogel daily disposable contact lens, MyDay™. The launch took place at the industry’s most prestigious exhibition, the BCLA (British Contact Lens Association), and we wanted to make sure the branding, technology and positioning of the product was revealed in the most impactful way possible to resonate with optical practitioners.

What is a brand?

We held a really stimulating session as part of the MAA’s Marketing 4 StartUp Britain Week and during the conversation, I found myself needing to convey what a brand actually is. I am not going to use any of the many “official” marketing terms and definitions here; and there are quite a few out there. I am, however, going to try and describe my personal view of what a brand should be, the culmination of my own experience, logic, and emotion. Fundamentally, we need to start with the consumer.
